Phil Hartley

Phil was a founder member of Cairns Bridge Club, a Committee member for 22 years including 14 years as treasurer.

Phil directed the Tuesday sessions and regularly arrived by 8am to get the room ready. Phil took the travellers home to score after a session. Later she would bring them back for Maureen Blair to erase all the scores so the travellers could be reused. In the 1980s Phil was part of the team that scored sessions manually - all done within 15 minutes following a session.

It would be fair to say the Club was a second home for Phil. Her husband Bob tiled the area where we now have our tea table. Another job Phil performed was sorting packs into suits to make it easier for the person hand dealing set hands for congresses and other events.

Many of the older Club members remember how she kept us on the straight and narrow, not wasting resources and keeping the Club books in credit.
